Munster Technological University

28 May, 2020

While we are living through a period of unprecedented challenge, it is a very exciting time for students to be embarking on their higher education journeys and I’d like to share with you news of a momentous development.

An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar TD, Minister for Education and Skills Joe McHugh TD, and Minister of State for Higher Education Mary Mitchell O’Connor yesterday (Tuesday 26 May, 2020) announced that the consortium of Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) and Institute of Technology Tralee (ITT) is set to become a Technological University. Munster Technological University (MTU) will be officially established on 1 January 2021 and will be Ireland’s newest Technological University.

With MTU establishment now confirmed, CAO applicants who enrol in CIT courses can look forward to receiving their parchments from the new Technological University.

Studying at MTU will have many benefits for students, including the following:

  • The range and quality of services and supports available to students will be enhanced;
  • Students will have a greater range of options available to them in relation to course choice, progression opportunities, research and industry placement;
  • Graduates will have available a greater selection of options nationally and internationally for further study and participation in research;
  • Graduates will experience enhanced employability both in Ireland and internationally as MTU graduates.

We wish to reassure you that course codes will remain the same for the foreseeable future and, thus, students will not need to make any changes to their CAO application. In addition, no change will apply to the campus on which students will be studying (Bishopstown, CIT Cork School of Music, CIT Crawford College of Art and Design, National Maritime College of Ireland), as this will be based on their choice of course, as before.
